Autolux, a trio of bass drums and guitar will bring Middle East a mellow yet intense take of electro rock. Having been invited by Trent Reznor himself to appear on Nine Inch Nails With Teeth tour back in 2005, Autolux is now completing a national U.S. tour with stops at the best venues in the best markets. The Nine Inch Nails influence is obvious in their music, but is mellowed out by a softer take on vocals and harmonies. They exude a confidence within their music that is hard to replicate. It's as if this band has taken the best elements of bands like Sonic Youth, NIN, Sigur Ros, and My Bloody Valentine and mixed them up with their own unique twist. Many of their songs, like "Supertoys" embody driving riffs and rhythm, but allow a much less intense vocal to occupy the main focus. It feels as though Autolux is almost fighting themselves, pushing with the rhythm and pulling with the vocals. However, the result is a synergy that creates a highly emotional and expressive bond.
This band has a somewhat torrid past. Their drummer, Carla Azar, after opening for Elvis Costello and having just been signed to a major record deal, fell off a stage and shattered her elbow. Obviously, this spelled doom for Autolux. However, Azar's musical career was saved by an experimental surgery that placed titanium pins in her elbow in order to re-establish the joint. She made a full recovery and has since been on many major tours anchoring Autolux at the drums. Their history has been a string of appearances that have lead to other appearances, keeping them on the road with the right people. After playing Coachella in 2005, they toured with Nine Inch Nails, followed by a huge homecoming show at in their native Los Angeles with Queens of the Stone Age. This was followed by a spot on Jimmy Kimmel and a composition for the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. Their obvious rise to a national touring band will only be followed in the near future with more success. GO TO THIS SHOW. Before they get too big for Middle East.
