Crowding seven band members, many still with big black XXX's on their hands, onto a tiny stage, Hey Marseilles crushed TT The Bears last night, on the third date of their 'Road to Canadian Music Week' Tour. With stops in Saratoga Springs, New York, Cambridge, Burlington, VT, and Toronto, on the eve of NUMEROUS performances at SXSW next week, Hey Marseilles is a band you should hear NOW. TT's was packed for a Tuesday night, and with no doubt will be a sign of things to come for this extremely young, extremely talented band. Make sure you catch them if you're going to be at Canadian Music Week, or SXSW, or in Burlington tonight! The next time they come through any of these cities, you'll be hard pressed to find tickets.
Their sound is unique, with many multi-instrumentalists. Chorus' were rich like honey, with trumpets, viola, and accordion, reminding me of the first time I saw Beirut, except much more in-tune. Their vocalist commands the stage with a powerful elegance that requires little explanation, and can only be explained by seeing them live. Drums, horns, strings, guitars, and the superb vocals were all give their individual chance to shine, at all the right moments with respect to the function of the instrument. These guys are real.
